Proton Today
Our main plant in Shah Alam, near Kuala Lumpur, covers 99,400sq m. It houses an engine and transmission factory, castings plant, R&D centre and semi-high speed test track. This plant is capable of producing 240,000 cars every year.
A new modular assembly plant has been built at Tanjung Malim, north of Kuala Lumpur. This area, more than 50 times bigger than the Shah Alam site, has been nicknamed Proton City. It contains the new factory, plant, housing, a university and other commercial buildings. Three new models, including Gen•2 and Savvy, are produced here.
Personnel from Lotus are also closely involved in developing new Proton models at the design and development centre in Malaysia. This gives our cars a distinctively international edge.
From modest beginnings, Proton cars are now being exported to over 50 countries around the world.
